11. 1962 Ford Thunderbird
There is a great backstory to this Ford Thunderbird. Salesman Ernie Barrasso claimed he and Elvis grew up in the same neighborhood and they knew each other. About the Ford Thunderbird, he said: “They made only 200 of these particular cars, and we got one of them because we were such a large dealership. It was a unique car – red with a black interior and a movable steering column that broke to the right. A friend of mine saw it and said, ‘I’ll bet Elvis would buy that car.’ ”
And he did buy this vehicle. He drove it from the dealership for $6,284, which was not an insignificant sum of money back then. However, Elvis had no luck with this car. Some of the wires on the wire wheel covers had come loose, and they were knocking against the body. They couldn’t have been replaced because the company who produced them had gone out of business.
Presley was mad, and he called Detroit and requested to talk to “Mr. Ford.” Edsel Ford told him to return the car to the nearest dealership, and they gave the singer his money back.
