VW Golf created a class. Then Golf GTI created another class. And it always did everything without “bling” and unnecessary exposure. As time passed GTI had become insufficient at the beginning of new millennium and R version came to picture with monstrous 3.2-liter engine fitted in a little hatchback body. If we draw parallel to Audi, GTI would coincide with S, while R would match RS, but only inside VW lineup configuration.
Pay attention to last part of the previous sentence, as Audi is premium brand while VW is not, so if we clash two brands against each other, Golf R would match S3, while RS3 stays beyond touch. As time changed again, big, bulky V6 was buried, as downsizing dictated new rules. Engine with 2000 cc doesn’t sound so preposterous but believe when we say that 2016 VW Golf R has plenty to offer.

Golf has never done anything radical in its history when it comes to appearance. Everybody is used to that, and R model in question is rather understated, quiet and shy to demonstrate under the hood happenings on its body. It is better, but it won’t steer your emotions much, although R model improves the things a little bit with the special steering wheel, R-branded seats, unique shifter knob and door sills. Update for 2016 introduces Volkswagen’s new infotainment system featuring Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink and USB charging.

And now, see why this section has stated title above. R comes with 2.0-liter inline-four making 292 horsepower and 280lb-ft of torque. It propels the car to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and 155 mph is limited top speed, all while offering fuel economy of 26 mpg combined. Competition in Focus RS and Subaru WRX Sti offers couple decimals more, but overall it is quite brutal for a family hatch. You can choose between manual and DSG dual-clutch, which is remarkable so better go for it, despite manual shifting pleasures that you are losing.
While moving, it doesn’t hesitate to corner, and it doesn’t rebel if you go crazy with wheel turns. Another good thing would be adaptive suspension named “Dynamic Chassis Control” (DCC), allowing you to choose between normal, comfort or race modes.

Base price is $37,895 which is slightly upwards from above mentioned competition, and there are two trim levels: base trim or DCC & Navigation.
OVERALL
2016 VW Golf R is a specific offer for specific buyers and from there comes the title of this story. Focus RS and WRX Sti are faster, far crazier looking and suitable for posters in the boy’s room.
But what if you are a dentist, professor or administrative clerk, and while you wear your everyday grayish sweater it doesn’t mean that you don’t have the desire to let off some steam by putting the pedal to the metal and happily crumple your boring sweater against beautiful sports seats.
