It feels like every week we’re getting these new car renderings which show an old car reimagined for today. But the question isn’t can you do it, but should you do it and here’s why. First of all, not everyone wants a new car paying some sort of tribute to a predecessor. The purists out there would prefer to leave the old cars in the past where they belong and not mess with icons, and to a certain point, they’re right. I mean, why would you name your car the Ferrari Enzo once again for instance? You did it, it worked, and you leave it at that. You don’t mess with legends. Once more, if you’re going to give a NEW car an old name, why bother? 2017 Chevrolet Chevelle SS ! It’s not the same car anymore, it’s not even close to being the same car. The years and years of evolution make it an entirely new thing so why not give it a new name altogether and start a new trend?

What needs to happen for the 2017 Chevy Chevelle SS to be introduced?
Without a doubt, Chevelle was one of the most popular muscle cars. With a philosophy that there’s no replacement for displacement, we received some incredible engines under the hood of these iconic vehicles. Those times are pretty much long gone, and some of the modern muscle cars even went for four-cylinder turbo engines which is kinda sad even it does offer good performances. For any engine and the entire car, the driver must be on hand a set of tools for the mechanics to be ready for the unexpected on the road
Let’s get back to the topic. Last, third-gen, was in production until 1977 meaning that a long time has passed since the final units were delivered, but still, this might not be an obstacle for the company to reintroduce it to the market. For it to be successful, it would need to pay homage to the original but to be modern and in line with other vehicles offered in the segment.
We are not going into details this time as we already talked about what the 2017 Chevy Chevelle SS could bring if it comes. What we will again stress out is the need for the car maker to bring iconic looks of the most popular version in combination with all the latest tech. We can see more than few great examples of this today and when we add that vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang are near and even above 100,000 units per year it is a logical move for a carmaker to bring another model that could further boost sale figures of the company.
Why Chevelle?
On the other hand, you have to be real and consider the possibility that: 1. it’s next to impossible to come up with good names (read carefully, good names, not just names) for all of the cars. Eventually, you’re going to run out of good name ideas which are short, catchy and easy to say. With a number of vehicles on sale today, that task is next to impossible. Then you have the fact that manufacturers are banking and playing on a car’s history and heritage to sell more units. Think of the Ford Mustang. If they renamed it after the first gen, it wouldn’t have even half of the appeal today, would it? Yes, you could make an argument that it’s a continued evolution rather than building a “tribute” car some 20 years later, but the point stands.
Where does that leave us on the name front? Well, when it comes to boring names and cars, most people don’t really care if you use the name again or not. If it’s just a consumer vehicle to get you from A to B for your average Joe, who cares. But, once you get into the sports cars, the luxury cars, the El Caminos and the Chevelles, it matters. Rumors regarding the new El Camino have been circulating the internet for a while now, but it seems that almost all of the glory has been stolen by the “new” Chevelle.
2017 Chevy Chevelle Design
The current Chevrolet SS has been having trouble selling lately. Only 3000 units were sold in 2015. That makes it one of Chevy’s worst models at the moment (sales and profit wise). We might see it get discontinued soon which leaves the question: will the Chevelle take its spot? Well, the guys at Chevrolet don’t want to give out too much detail so they’re neither denying nor agreeing with the fact that a Chevelle model will soon join the lineup. We personally think that if the SS gets discontinued, we will see a Chevelle return simply to boost profit and fill the gap. Now we’re not saying that Chevrolet will do it simply for profit, but the fact of the matter is that if the SS was named Chevelle, some clever advertising with the name could have seen it skyrocket the sales up to 3, 4 or even 5 times as much. We’ll let you read into that on your own, but if there’s one thing certain, it’s that the name brings a lot of attention and popularity (or lack of) to a car.
The images (renderings) of the Chevelle are simply a rough estimate, a guess if you will, into what the car might look like. But it’s looking more and more promising that the Chevelle will actually be a four-door replacement for the SS rather than the two-door coupe we know from the past. Again, you have this whole argument over whether a new car based on an old one should stay as true to its roots as possible or if it’s okay to deviate. What we need to consider that its purpose is to take the model and with that, the entire company, to a new, higher level. If the Chevelle name has to bring life to Chevrolet’s nearly dead rear-wheel-drive sedan platform, then so be it.
Drivetrain @ New Chevy Chevelle SS
We’ve still got some time to wait and see, but we wouldn’t mind receiving a rear-wheel driven, four-door Chevelle. Especially one that hides a large 6.2-liter V8 under the hood with upwards of 400 hp. Well, we say that but the reality is that the base engine will most likely be a 3.6-liter V6 with around 300hp. Still, that’s not bad, considering you’re pushing around 280 lb-ft of torque. It’s the V8 where all the fun starts. No, it’s not just about the power, but the sound of it as well.
A six-speed manual is almost certainly going to happen (if the car gets built that is), but there’s always the option of a six-speed or an eight-speed auto. Power should be sent to the rear wheels only, but with the current state of the sedan market, we wouldn’t be surprised if it gets all-wheel drive as well. Markets paper writer that get affected by heavier snow tend to go for all-wheel drive cars (Canada, parts of U.S.) and having an AWD sedan for those regions might prove to be a sales hit.
Release date of Chevelle SS 2017
Based on some rough calculations, taking into consideration when the SS should be retired and a host of other factors, we’re sorry to say that the Chevelle won’t see the light of day before 2018 at the very best. But look at it this way: you have all that time to hope that it gets built and in the meantime, enjoy GM’s other products. The Camaro seems to be a great place to turn at a time like this.
