2017 Mazda CX-5

Update: 12/16/2016

Although the new CX-5 is scheduled to have its debut in the U.S. in 2017, the fans are already going crazy about the new member of the Mazda family. Needless to say, expectations are high.

As Car and Driver reports, the Japanese version of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 shares a few design-related similarities with the CX-9 and Mazda 3. The 2017 Japanese model has a new grille, slimmer taillights, and more attractive headlights. Mazda really made an effort to make improvements both on the exterior as well as on the interior which now has a more stylish look.

The Japanese styled CX-5 will be available with three powertrain options, two of which are gasoline and one diesel engine. The first two are 2.0 and 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G gasoline-powered four-cylinder units, and the third one is a Skyactiv-D turbocharged 2.2-diesel engine. The first version will not be hitting the U.S., but Mazda decided to make their fans happy with the diesel option that was long awaited. That engine can produce 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission. Although no official details about the U.S. spec diesel engine have been revealed, it will most likely have the same output as the Japanese version.

Mazda has put some additional effort into safety features of the new vehicle. As Fiji Sun reports, the 2017 model will feature an o-ACTIVESENSE which includes a forward sensing camera, millimeter wave radar, and near-infrared lasers that are designed to help drivers to avoid accidents. Other than that, the 2017 Mazda CX5 has adaptive LED headlights, lane-keep assist system, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.

Although the vehicle had its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, many are eager to see what the U.S. version of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 will look like as we know that the majority of vehicles intended for this market are different from the versions sold around the globe. One thing is for certain, the new U.S. CX-5 will be an excellent vehicle, and we are looking forward to its debut.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Test Drive Update 12/08/2016:

Finally, test drive reports about 2017 Mazda CX-5 are pouring in, and we are glad to say that most comments are very positive for this five-passenger compact SUV. The vehicle in question was equipped with the most powerful option in the lineup, the 2.5-liter I4 engine that produces respective 184 hp.

When you get top shelf trim with the price of $32,285 you expect to see a lot and that is the case with this one, but know that there are still options you can choose and push this tag even higher. Compared to many great rivals in the segment, we need to say that design is something that will certainly distinguish this vehicle.

During several trips, it was clear that CX-5 is a great choice for those families that have small kids as the rear seat offer enough space for them while three adults could seriously suffer on longer rides. This is something you can expect in the segment, but don’t get us wrong as this is more than capable family hauler.

There have been reports that the 2.0-liter I4 gasoline engine will be dropped from the range and that the only option will be the 2.5-liter unit plus the diesel representative. Larger gasoline powerplant is sufficient in most cases, and it is a nice upgrade over smaller one, but we need to say that most competitors offer more and that some even come with turbocharged options. If you push this machine, it will get slightly louder for our taste but nothing to make you feel uncomfortable. When you reach your desired speed, it will make purring noise, especially on lower rpm’s.

Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is done in 7.7 seconds, and even Ford offers better results thanks to its EcoBoost lineup, we know that this vehicle will rarely be used for sprints and racing, if ever. What we also liked is the handling that gives you confidence and security. Precise steering in this segment is not something that we usually get, but 2017 Mazda CX-5 surprises us with it and its road manners.

The overall impression is that this is one of the best choices on the compact SUV market and just like before we expect to see far more of these replacing mid-size sedans for family haulers. We really liked the interior design and feel, on top of that, you get decent engine lineup and great design.

2017 Mazda CX-5 06/12/2016 Update:

The all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5 production started in Japan. The new vehicle will be built in companies Ujina plant which is located near Hiroshima and will be ready for the medium SUV Japanese market introduction which is scheduled for February 2017. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 already had its debut at the LA Auto Show where we could see that the new compact SUV has different interior and exterior and that it features Kodo design language. Nevertheless, it still has a lot of similarities with the first generation CX-5 and big brother, the CX-9.

Mazda CX-5 has been in demand ever since its debut in 2011, and almost every fourth Mazda vehicle bought all around the world is the CX-5. In addition, there has been an increase in a number of sold units every year since it was introduced.

Mazda did not want to reveal what engine the CX-5 will be equipped with, but it will probably feature an upgraded version of the SkyActiv 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel unit. The six-speed transmission will remain the same. Although the same wheelbase will come, the 2017 CX-5 will be a worthy opponent because it features a stiffer body, improvements to noise insulation, new rear-seat face-level air vents, and Mazda’s multi-information head-up display.

The new vehicle will hit the Australian market in the first half of 2017 with more details to be revealed before that. So, sit tight and prepare yourself for another amazing Mazda vehicle which can be seen only at Ujina factory for now.

2017 Mazda CX-5 11/16/2016 Update:

Numerous spy and teaser photos clearly indicated that the 2017 Mazda CX-5 will draw inspiration for some of its parts from CX-9 big brother and CX-4 that is currently offered only on the Chinese market. Until now we didn’t have any official images, but now it has been fully unveiled at the LA Auto Show press event.

We could hear some reviewers suggesting that this is a mid-cycle redesign but we tend to disagree after we see the number of changes and upgrades that are brought with this vehicle. The second generation brings slimmer headlight units that are obviously inspired by what CX-9 crossover and MX-5 sports car offer. “Kodo – soul of motion” design language is heavily employed for this car, and at the front we have mesh pattern grille instead of the horizontal bars.

Changes for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 are not ending here as the rear segment was revised. You won’t get the level of upgrades here like it is the case with the front but still, we are getting taillights that look leaner and the lower part that comes with a black trim underline. Comparing previous model and a new generation will certainly show you the differences but let’s be clear, these are not dramatic.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Interior

The cabin is the part where we have most upgrades. Instead of the slightly strange dashboard with clumsily inserted screen of the infotainment system we are getting floating screen that is now far more pleasant looking. What we also notice is that the various buttons are better implemented and looks premium, at least on the pictures. A steering wheel that now comes thinner offers various system controls and even this is something we are used to getting from modern vehicles we need to say that everything gives the impression of premium feel.

Engine Department

One of the segments that didn’t get much attention is the engine department. We can immediately say that those previously available units will come with the 2017 Mazda CX 5 and we are getting three options. The base is the 2.0-liter I4 gasoline unit that can be upgraded with the 2.5-liter also four cylinder engine. Only diesel representative is the 2.2-liter inline four, but at this point, we still do not know if it will appear in the US. We must admit that we are slightly disappointed with this lineup. Even these gasoline engines are a good choice we hoped to see turbocharged options on the offer. For now, there are no info about this possibility, if Japanese company decides to bring few of those we would gladly take them.

G-Vectoring

A system that is known as the G-Vectoring Control is something completely new for the CX-5 range. What it does is to offer torque reduction and distribution for the front wheels so that you would get smoother steering when you go into the corner. This improves stability and handling and is working with the engine to deliver the optimal amount of power to the wheels.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Release Date

On the event regarding the launch of the 2017 Mazda CX-5, we could hear info that this vehicle will be available for purchase in February. Initially, it is set to come only to Japan with worldwide sales starting few months after that. Even we still do not have any official info about the prices we can predict that it will not significantly differ from the previous version that starts at $21,795.

2017 Mazda CX-5 is just around the corner!

Not that long ago Mazda managed to find the best recipe for their cars. They somehow managed to insert the character of a sports car in every car they made, from their smallest hatchback all the way up to the line of crossovers. The Mazda CX 5 is no exception, and it has been updated quite recently to offer a new look and some upgrades inside the cabin. Despite that, rumors suggest that the upcoming Mazda CX-5 2017, which is expected by the end of the year, should be a new model. This is not all that unusual considering the car was released nearly four years ago. However, it would certainly be faster than many other cars out there.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Changes

Mazda would make this move to keep the CX-5 up to date and ahead of its competitors. It will likely still use the same platform as before. However, some of its engines, running gear, and certainly design details are going to change. The new car is expected to get a sportier appearance, and it should also receive a completely new version in the lineup as well. Rumors suggest that the future CX-5 could get a sporty version with a similar design to the BMW X6. This has yet to be confirmed, but Mazda did release a small crossover that comes with this type of design only a few months ago.

We should first see the new version of the car for the US market with the 2017 Mazda CX-5. While it will be released during the last quarter of this year, the car is probably going to hit the market until the mid of 2017. Its price is expected to change as well, and from the current $21,795 to slightly more than $22,000 for a base model. Even though this is more than before, Mazda should be offering more features, so the value for money will be improved for sure.

Design of new Mazda Cx-5

The “Kodo” design which has been used in all Mazda cars in the recent years is expected to make a return. However, like it did back in 2012, the new CX-5 should become the trendsetter once again. As a result, it should hit the market with a new design, “Kodo 2.0”, that should be even sportier than before. While some design traits from the older model are likely going to be carried over, its rear, profile, and even grille design should be all new. The cabin will have to go through a lot of changes as well. However, we are quite sure that here Mazda will borrow from the model 6 quite heavily.

When we take a look at what the sedan has in interior and what’s on the offer we don’t mind this a bit. Comparing currently available CX5 and Mazda 6 we can see many similarities and we think that this will continue with a new version of CX5. Multi-functional wheel hides large analog instrument clusters that show speed, rpm, temperatures, fuel status and similar. Design and general layout of both setups are almost identical, but we could notice that model 6 brings higher quality materials. Larger display than before is expected on center console while the audio and climate control buttons will be located right under the air vents.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Engine

The 2.0 and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engines are expected to make a comeback in the future 2017 Mazda CX-5 as well. While these are not offering all that much power, both of these are among the most efficient out there. We should see a small boost to their output of around 5 to 10% but nothing major. It should be more than enough to make the car feel as lively as ever. The European model of the car will also take advantage of the old but still good 2.2-liter diesel. Reports say that a small power bump and likely an efficiency upgrade are in order and quite possible.

The big change would come with the new sportier trim level. Rumors suggest that this version of the car would get a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four petrol engine. This unit is same as in the CX-9 but tweaked for more power but less torque. An output of roughly 270 to 290 horsepower and more than 260 lb-ft of torque should be possible with ease. The old six-speed automatic is expected to be replaced by a newly developed gearbox. This could get up to 10 gear ratios, and it should improve the way the car feels considerably.\
