BMW has brought huge model expansion in recent years which is nothing strange as Mercedes took the same approach, while Audi is following but in its usual more restrained manner. One of Munich recent novelties was the 4 Series Gran Coupe, which is basically four-door 4 Series coupe, enough to make it possibly most alluring BMW today. Since it has been three years from the moment of introduction and since direct rival Audi A5 Sportback is about to arrive in newest clothing, 2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe comes with some nip and tuck to keep it well in the game.
VISUAL CHANGES
The German company has for some time now followed the same strategy with redesigns applying subtle touches primarily to the lights, but effectively making whole cars visually fresh. The same case is happening here. New headlights follow the recent brand’s design cues introduced with new 7 Series which mean they went from round to more angular ones while inner side lens is opened toward the grille.
Mentioned lights are LED treated, and they replace former xenon ones even in base trim followed by full LED fog lamps also. As expected, rear lights carry new more modern configuration. Through the trims, alloy wheels are redesigned and there are two new color options- Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orang, available only for Grand Coupe model.
CABIN
Cabin gained even more subtle changes. Most of the changes are concerning broadening of available options, so there is new chrome trim, gloss black treatment and visible stitching for the center console, three new upholstery colors, and three new trim strips.
The story stays the same, the interior is attractive, luxurious, with beautiful seating position, but materials are lagging behind newest Merc and Audi offer as well as fit and finish. Brand’s iDrive stays one of the best infotainment systems in the industry, with crisp colors and fast responses.
PERFORMANCE
There will be no power increases for this redesign, and everything stays the same, as it was already in front of the competition. US market offers two petrol choices, 430i carrying 2.0-liter I4 unit delivering 252 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, enough to reach 60 mph in around 6 seconds.
A better option, or at least more powerful one, would be the 440i which stands for a 3.0-liter I6 engine rated at 326 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, lowering acceleration time to 5.2 seconds. Power is usually sent to rear wheels while all-wheel xDrive is optional, and for gearboxes, you can start with manual or go for the 8-speed automatic. European engine offer is richer with one more petrol option and four diesel ones. Car stays planted on the road and capable of harsher cornering, though uncommunicative steering wheel remains as the spoiler of perfect fun.

PERFECT BEEMER?
We think yes. All the coupes and cabriolets are more than alluring, but they wouldn’t get you anywhere if you bring your family along and are now purposely avoiding SUV-coupe part of it in order not to be rude. If you are thinking about ultra luxury 6 Series Grand Coupe, we are not going to argue with the luxury part of it, but you have to admit that this saloon coupe is somehow better composed as far as shape goes and way cheaper than mind blowing price tag of the bigger brother.
2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is by far the classiest thing that BMW has to offer, but which can also allow you to take your family, friends and their luggage with you, so yes, it is a perfect Beemer and that with a quite acceptable price tag of $42,500 for a start.
