Around since 2008, the current Fiesta can’t really be regarded as a new car even though it has been updated numerous times so far. Because of that Ford is planning to deliver an upgraded version in secret. The upcoming 2018 Ford Fiesta will be an entirely new model which will have pretty much nothing in common with the ongoing generation. So far Ford hasn’t said a word about their upcoming hatchback. However, the car has been spied testing a couple of times already, and it seems to be vastly different from the current model.
Changes
For starters, the upcoming Fiesta is definitely larger than before. We have seen test mules ever since the end of 2015 and the car was using a wider track than before. Well, the newly spied camouflaged model seems to be quite a bit wider than before. The length and height, on the other hand, seem to be quite similar. We are also quite sure that the cabin will be all new while its equipment and quality levels are going to be well above the older model.
There is no word on the price just yet. However, considering that Ford will be introducing the Ka+ in many markets, we may get a more expensive Fiesta. This would be fine if they actually add more to the car but until it is released, we can only guess what will happen. Starting price is expected to range from $15,000 to $16,000 for a base version, but if Ford decides to provide even more features in entry-level trim, we might see the even higher price. What we do know is that the company does not have a lot of room for changes as they do want to keep it competitive.
Take a look at the 2017 Ford Fiesta so you can compare it to the new model.
So far it seems that the 2018 Ford Fiesta will hit the market sometimes at the end of 2017, most likely during the third quarter of the next year. Until then we should see a concept in the late 2016 and probably a production-ready model in early 2017.
The older B-segment platform is going to be reused by Ford. However, it seems that its entire running gear and most of the materials will change. High strength steel is going to be used in combination with aluminum while some suspension components could be made out of aluminum, at least on some models. Overall weight will be reduced influencing handling, efficiency, and performances. Furthermore, it is predicted that the chassis will be stronger even it comes lighter. Brake discs at the front and at the back are now going to be standard while the top end versions will get ventilated discs on both axles. Unlike before, this time around the car may receive an independent suspension at the back. This should make it quite a bit better to drive, and it should also free up some trunk space.
Design
While up until a few weeks ago we didn’t know a thing about its design, the new Fiesta is slowly being revealed to us. The newly spied camouflaged car is different. For starters, it is quite a bit wider than the older model. Also, the rear has been completely redesigned and even though it might change, it looks a lot like a new A Class which is quite impressive.
The front end is a bit more reminiscent to the latest Focus, and that’s to be expected. However, the entire package looks more like a blown-up version of the Figo rather than a Focus or a Fiesta, which certainly is an interesting move.
2018 Ford Fiesta Engine
There hasn’t been much talk about what engines the future 2018 Ford Fiesta is going to use. We are quite sure that most of the current engines will be carried over unchanged. An ST model is a given, and we are quite sure that the ST200 engine will make a return on the regular Fiesta ST. Also, it seems that this generation will be the first to spawn an RS version of the Fiesta.
Not much has been said, but many think Ford will return to their roots. We may see a Ford Fiesta with close to 250 horsepower, front-wheel drive, a limited slip differential, manual gearbox and two doors. The end result would likely be, with its new suspension system, one of the most fun to drive cars ever.
