6. Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO is the epitome of a muscle car. In 1964, the model called Tempest received a 6.4-liter V8 whereas the carmaker stole the name from Ferrari. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, which means that it is a race car with an on-road counterpart, but the Pontiac GTO wasn’t specifically designed to race. However, the name was cool, and the GTO would become an iconic American muscle car.
